Q. Why breed alpacas?

A1. Lifestyle/Pets.

Castrated males:

o  are $550 each

o  require shearing each year (our shearer can come to your place ...more...)

o  require an injection each year (our shearer can do this too)

Alpacas are a wonderful animal with excellent temperament.  Like many other animals, you get back what you put into them.  If you put them in a paddock and have nothing to do with them, then they'll be a paddock animal that will shy away and wont want anything to do with you.

However, if you treat them with kindness and interact with them in a non threatening gentle way, then they will quickly become quiet, gentle creatures that seek to interact with you and your family.

Castrated males are the cheapest pets.  A lot of people now purchase a couple of pregnant females and often start hand processing alpaca fibre at home.  An alpaca fleece can be turned into about $500 worth of products by a home spinner or felter.

If you are stressed, spend some time with your alpacas - sit on a milk crate and sip on a cold drink or cuppa - the alpacas will de-stress you in a matter of minutes.

We can sell you a pet castrated male for $550 and have pregnant females for as little has $1,100 but you'll need at least 2 alpacas as being herd animals it is essential that they always have company.  ...more...

o NOTE that we (Rivergum Rise) provide "Live Cria Guarantee" with every pregnant female we sell AND with every mating that we sell.  ie. if you do not get a viable cria, then we will provide another mating free of charge.

o  Alpaca fleece

o  We sell our alpaca fibre to:

Australian Alpaca Fleece Limited (AAFL)in Melbourne.

o customers via our web site  ...more...

o  Alpaca fibre is highly sought after and is considered to be a luxury fibre with wonderful properties.

Alpaca fleece is lighter and warmer than wool yet stronger and more durable.  Alpaca fibre has a hollow insulating core making it warmer than wool. Alpaca fleece grows naturally in many shades within the broader colour classes of white, fawn, brown, grey, rose grey and black.  Another advantage of alpaca fibre is that it is non-allergenic.  If you find wool to be prickly or itchy switch to clothing made from warm, luxurious alpaca fleece - the fine fibres are silky smooth.
